Yes, Prosecco belongs at Thanksgiving. It’s at its best as the welcome drink and with the salty, crisp and tart parts of the meal: the appetizers, the stuffing, the green beans and the cranberry sauce. Choose Brut, serve it at 43 to 46°F, and count on five glasses from a 750 mL bottle.
Thanksgiving is a meal of side dishes with a turkey attached. That’s good news for the wine, because the sides are where Prosecco does its best work.
Does Prosecco go with turkey?
It goes better with the plate than with the bird. Roast turkey is mild. The trouble comes from everything around it: butter, gravy, salty stuffing, tart cranberry, sweet potatoes. Wine writers recommend sparkling wine for Thanksgiving because its bright acidity and bubbles cut through rich food and reset your palate between bites.
Prosecco is fresh and fruity rather than toasty, with green apple and pear. That makes it a natural for the first half of the meal and a good match for most of the sides. Some guests will want a red with the dark meat, and sommeliers often suggest Pinot Noir or Beaujolais for that. Let them. A Thanksgiving table has room for two bottles, and the Prosecco is usually the first one empty.
What to pour with each dish
| Dish | What works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Appetizers: cheese board, nuts, deviled eggs | Prosecco Brut | Salt and bubbles are old friends |
| Turkey and gravy | Brut, or a Prosecco Rosé | Acidity lifts the gravy; Rosé adds a little red fruit |
| Stuffing and green bean casserole | Brut | Crisp wine against salty, savory food |
| Cranberry sauce | Prosecco Rosé | Red berries meet red berries |
| Sweet potatoes with marshmallows | Honestly, nothing dry | Very sweet food makes any dry wine taste sharp |
| Pumpkin or pecan pie | Coffee, or a sweeter wine | Same reason: save the Brut for the toast |

Brut or Extra Dry?
Brut. On a sparkling wine label, “Extra Dry” is the sweeter style: Brut has up to 12 grams of sugar per liter, Extra Dry has 12 to 17. Thanksgiving already brings maple glazes, cranberry sauce and marshmallows. A sweeter wine piles sugar on sugar. Brut keeps the meal tasting like a meal. Our sweetness levels guide explains every label.
How many bottles of Prosecco for Thanksgiving?
A 750 mL bottle pours five 5-ounce glasses. If Prosecco is the welcome drink and the toast, plan two glasses for each guest who wants it:
| Guests drinking Prosecco | Welcome glass + toast |
|---|---|
| 8 | 4 bottles |
| 12 | 5 bottles |
| 20 | 8 bottles |

Five 5-ounce glasses per 750 mL bottle. Count the guests who want Prosecco, not everyone at the table, and buy the spare early: plenty of stores close early on Thanksgiving.
If you’re pouring it through dinner as well, add a glass per guest. Buy one spare; plenty of stores close early on Thanksgiving, and the neighbors are busy. For any other number, use our drinks calculator.
Easy Thanksgiving Prosecco cocktails
- Cranberry fizz: 2 oz chilled cranberry juice and ½ oz orange liqueur, topped with Prosecco. That’s a Poinsettia, and it’s the color of the table.
- Cider and Prosecco: 2 oz chilled apple cider in a flute, topped with 4 oz Prosecco, with a thin apple slice. It tastes like the season and takes ten seconds.
- For a crowd: a raspberry Prosecco punch in a bowl, so you’re not mixing drinks while the turkey rests.
- Alcohol-free: sparkling apple cider in the same flutes. Nobody needs to explain their glass.

Serving it right
- Chill: a bucket of ice and water gets a bottle cold in about 15 minutes. The fridge will be full of pies, so plan the bucket.
- Serve: 43 to 46°F, in flutes or white-wine glasses.
- Open it safely: chill well, don’t shake, keep a hand on the cork and point the bottle away from people. Our New Year’s Eve guide has the full steps.
Our bottle for the table
Bella Principessa Prosecco DOC is Brut, with green apple and pear: the welcome glass and the sides. Bella Principessa Prosecco DOC Rosé is Glera with Pinot Noir and a touch of red berries, which is exactly what you want next to the cranberry sauce. Both come in a ceramic-painted bottle with no paper label, so they look dressed for the table before anyone sits down. They’re in stores in Florida now; see where to buy.
