Official 2025 figures report 667 million bottles bottled for Prosecco DOC and 266.1 million bottles shipped for Champagne. Prosecco DOC's reported volume is larger, but these are different measures. They do not establish a matched retail-sales comparison for the United States or a winner by sales value.
A headline announces a winner. The number looks convincing, and by the next conversation it has become proof of what everybody is drinking.
Before repeating it, check the small but important word beside the figure. Bottled, shipped and sold to consumers describe different stages of a wine's journey.
What do the latest full-year figures here show?
The Prosecco DOC consortium reported 667 million bottles bottled in 2025. Comité Champagne's 2025 figures report 266.1 million bottles shipped.
Those official figures show a larger reported bottle volume for DOC. They should retain their original labels rather than both being rewritten as retail sales. The DOC figure also does not automatically include the separate Prosecco DOCG appellations.
What do they not establish?
They do not answer which wine generated more retail revenue, which sold more in a particular U.S. store or which performed best during a different period. Those questions need matched market, date and measurement data.
A separate U.S. example shows why scope matters. Vinitaly’s October 2025 release, citing SipSource, reports a 30% share for Italian sparkling wine against Champagne’s 28% for the first seven months of 2025. Italian sparkling wine is a broader category than Prosecco alone. Those percentages should not be relabeled as a full-year, Prosecco-only result.
Category totals are not brand totals. They cannot establish Bella Principessa's sales, popularity or market share without product-specific evidence.
