50 BCE

Rome’s Empress Drinks “Pucinum”

Pliny the Elder wrote that Empress Livia credited her long life to a wine called Pucinum, made near what’s now Prosecco country.

Likely crafted from early Glera grapes — it was Prosecco before it had a name.

1593

The Village of Prosecco Lends Its Name

A small town near Trieste gives rise to the word Prosecco.

Over time, it became shorthand for both the grape and the style — though it originally referred only to the place.

1754

“Prosecco” Appears in Poetry

In a playful poem, Il Roccolo Ditirambo, the poet Aureliano Acanti makes one of the first written references to Prosecco in print.

1868

Antonio Carpenè Makes Prosecco Sparkle

The founder of Carpenè Malvolti, helps pioneer the Charmat method — making Prosecco sparkling and scalable.

1876

Italy’s First Winemaking School Opens

Carpenè co-founds the Scuola Enologica di Conegliano, which still trains many of today’s winemakers.

Early 1900s

Conegliano Valdobbiadene Rises

Producers like Adami raise quality standards in the hillside vineyards that later become the DOCG Superiore zones.

Prosecco Hills Named World Heritage Site

The hand-tended slopes of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene are honored by UNESCO — celebrating their cultural and viticultural legacy.

Bella Principessa Begins Quietly Pouring

Before the ceramic-painted bottles and velvet displays.
